Scene illustration of the “mad” tea party from Alice in Wonderland

Scene illustration is one of my favorite types of illustration since I was a little girl. Little did I know that I’ll become an illustrator.
The “mad” tea party from Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll is one of my favorite scenes from the beloved book. So I challenged myself to draw the “mad” tea party as a not so mad scene. To me, the March Hare, the Hatter, the always tired Dormouse felt like normal guests attending a tea party. Everything surreal felt very real to me. It could happen on any given day.
It was a challenge to find something particular for each anthropomorphic character. Something that would define each of them in a subtle yet visible way. An extravagant hat, an exquisite tea, a decor that feels real. Even if it has magical elements. That’s what makes Alice so credible. She feels so real, yet magical things and powers revolve around her. It’s a party that could easily happen in my own house.
